Communications and Outreach Program on Cryptosporidium

Consensus Planning Group was chosen by Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to conduct an outreach program on Cryptosporidium, a parasite that can infiltrate the water supply and cause potentially fatal consequences for individuals with weakened immune systems.

The program was designed to identify the best ways of communicating information about Cryptosporidium to at-risk individuals. Consensus Planning Group suggested a cost-effective approach that enabled participation across Metropolitan’s six-county territory and targeted involvement from a multi-ethnic audience.

Over 150 organizations representing people with HIV, people with organ transplants receiving immunosuppressive drugs, and people undergoing chemotherapy were contacted. Also targeted were organizations serving children and the elderly – two groups at higher risk of severe reactions to Cryptosporidium.

Working within a short timeframe, Consensus Planning Group was able to assemble a detailed set of recommendations, which Metropolitan Water District is now implementing.
